Question: Should I be worried about a leaky basement? Answer: Professional builders use a variety of methods and materials to help ensure that full basements and crawlspaces won’t leak. The key is to mitigate what’s called hydrostatic pressure—ground or surface-water build-up against the foundation walls that eventually causes cracks. Rubberized waterproofing membranes, drainage boards, and perimeter subsurface drainage all help keep incidental water away from the foundation and protect the foundation from cracks and leaks.
